Frequently Asked Questions

How will computational thinking help my child?
  • It improves academic performance as it teaches problem solving which is the core of STEM education. It improves creativity, builds resilience and persistence.
  • Computational thinking is used in almost every field, not only computer programming. It finds a lot of applications in disciplines such as finance, medicine, economics, engineering to name a few.
  • Building these concepts at an early age lays a strong foundation for future learning.
What is the difference between coding and computational coding?

Coding means giving instructions to the computer in a language that the computer understands. You must have heard of languages like C,Python, Java, Scratch. These are programming languages or languages that the computer understands and we write instructions in these languages we are writing “code” or doing “coding”.

However, computational thinking is the step that comes before coding. It is the process of breaking down a problem into step by step solutions. It’s a problem solving methodology which can be applied to any context and not limited to its use in coding.

My child is quite young. Will he/she be able to understand the concepts?

At Kinder Koder we use age appropriate games and activities to explain concepts.

For example: pattern recognition activity differs by age in the following way:

What’s the minimum age for a child to start learning computational thinking ?

There is no minimum age. You can start at any age. Infact kids start developing these skills on their own. By having guided play you can really enhance their abilities and confidence. We recommend these activities for 3+ as by that age kids are able to do 1:1 correspondence and have basic numeracy skills ( counting 1-10). This opens up a range of activities that can be done with them.

What if my child doesn’t want to be a computer programmer ?

Learning CT skills is NOT limited to computer programmers. Every child should develop these skills to be better prepared for adapting to future technological advancements. So you don’t teach your child how to write because they want to be an author but because it’s an important life skill. Same is true for CT.

I don’t have a computer or iPad for my child. How will he/ she learn ?

Our approach is device agnostic. Your child will develop CT skills without using any screens by the means of physical games and activities. Learning is better when integrated with play and that’s what we do.

I don’t understand coding. How will I help my child ?

First of all, computational thinking ⇎ coding. Coding or computer programming is one of the applications of computational thinking but it’s a much broader concept. CT is applied in many disciplines such as biology, economics, engineering, archaeology, finance to name a few. So not knowing coding is by no means a roadblock for understanding computational thinking.
